2012 Rotto Rehearsal (10km Solo Qualifying Swim)

After entries for the 2012 HBF Rottnest Channel Swim close, all first time solo swimmers, and solo swimmers who have not completed a solo crossing in the past five (5) years, will receive notification that they must prove their ability to complete the 19.7km event in the required time and are requested to enter the 10km Rotto Rehearsal. Swimmers must complete the Rotto Rehearsal in under 4 hours and 15 minutes to qualify for the 2012 HBF Rottnest Channel Swim.

- The 2012 Rotto Rehearsal will be held on Sunday, 29 January 2012 at Sorrento, Western Australia. This qualifying swim will allow all swimmers the full 4 hours and 15 minutes to qualify. Registrations are open now and entries close at 5:00pm Wednesday, 25 January 2012. For more information and details on how to register, please visit: http://www.openwaterswimming.com.au/

The results of all solo swimmers who partake in the Rotto Rehearsal to qualify, will be automatically forwarded to the Rottnest Channel Swim Association.

Swimmers can alternatively choose to qualify by partaking in any other 10km open water swim between the months of November 2011 and January 2012 however, for 2012, the RCSA Committee have made an exception that the following Open Water Series swim in Round 1 to be held on Sunday, 30 October 2011 will be accepted as a qualifying swim. Please be mindful when selecting alternative qualifying swims as different rules may apply. For example, some swims allocate different cut-off times which may not allow swimmers the full 4 hours and 15 minutes to qualify.

On completion of an alternative qualifying swim, swimmers must email admin@rottnestchannelswim.com.au with a web link to the website that contains the swimmers' qualifying swim results and this email must be received by no later than Sunday, 29 January 2012.

Two alternative qualifying swims available in Western Australia are as follows:

- Swimming WA - Open Water Series - Round 1 - Sunday, 30 October 2011 at Rockingham, Western Australia. This qualifying swim will allow all swimmers the full 4 hours and 15 minutes to qualify. Registrations are open now and entries close at 5:00pm Wednesday, 26 October 2011.

- Swimming WA - Open Water Series - Round 4 SWA State Championships - Saturday, 26 November 2011 at Champion Lakes, Western Australia. This qualifying swim will not allow the full 4 hours and 15 minutes to qualify. Registrations are open now and entries close at 5:00pm Wednesday, 23 November 2011.

Paddler Training/Events

There are numerous events held over the summer months for paddlers who want to prepare for the 19.7km crossing of the Rottnest Channel Swim.

The 2011 Mainpeak Paddlesports Bay 2 Beach to be held on Sunday 27 November 2011 is Perth's most unique paddle race with national and international paddlers having made their way to Perth to compete in the event. Over 300 paddlers have entered the event in 2009 and 2010. The 2011 event promises to be another well supported race with the ocean paddling discipline growing throughout WA. The race starts at Mosman Bay and the field heads down the river towards Fremantle, passing through the iconic Fremantle Harbour then out around the North Mole inside a buoy off Leighton Beach and down to finish 17km later at the iconic Cottesloe Beach.

Categories include single skis, double skis, sea kayaks, plastic skis, outriggers and the SUP's.

Entries for the 2011 Mainpeak Paddlesports Bay 2 Beach event are open online now until 22 November 2011 at http://www.wa.canoe.org.au/default.asp?Page=10999&MenuID=Events/c13288/10600.

  • miss the cut-off for entries for the 2012 HBF Rottnest Channel Swim.

The results for the 2009, 2010 and most recent 2011 Virtual Rottnest Channel Swim can be downloaded below.
